The Honduras campesino land struggle

The Aguán River Valley in the department of Colón, Honduras is a site of both ongoing conflict and a powerful social movement. In a struggle for land that greatly predates, but was also further exacerbated by, the 2009 military coup in Honduras, campesinos in the Aguán are constantly subject to human rights abuses, repression and injustice, but are also unfailingly resilient. Poor, vulnerable, and landless, the Aguán campesinos truly represent and embody the Resistance movement in Honduras.

Ethics and Charity

Now that the holidays have passed, the prioritization of giving has dropped considerably.  Not to cite some deep rooted, fundamental ‘selfishness of man’, but in all honesty, the advent of returning to routine certainly forces us to shelve our charitability. Now, while I’m not trying to preach, I do wish to remind that the depths of winter aren’t necessarily confined to the holiday season, and that there are many people who cannot afford proper clothing. In fact, come late January and February, it’s supposed to get much colder, especially in the Vancouver area. At jhr SFU, we’re trying to do our part by organizing coat drives, and this is an easy contribution that many people can partake in, but there are many other ways that people can donate to charities.

You’re on your way to school, ready to catch the skytrain, XL coffee cup in hand, when a Metro or 24 Hour employee hands you a newspaper headlining the latest front page tragedy. You get to your 8:30am class, load up your laptop and go on Facebook and see the very same story swamping your newsfeed. After a long day of lecture and labs, you get home, flip on the T.V. and again, you see the same tragic story blitzing the 6 o’clock news.
